UNMC Training Reaches Statewide

UNMC demonstrated sending cutting-edge 3D and holographic technology across the miles to Great Plains Health in North Platte and a remote site in Kearney. This real-time training session engaged healthcare providers from several disciplines in a cross-state, surgical and critical care training event. Using holographic displays, Virtual Reality (VR) tools and 3D imagery, Dr. Zachary Bauman, guided participants through managing chest injuries and associated risks with a focus on the advantages of rib stabilization. Remote and distributed outreach improves access to emerging knowledge and skills for rural clinicians. Adoption of innovative technologies is part of iEXCEL’s ongoing effort to provide secure and timely distance learning activities.

Surgical Shoulder Lab for Advanced Skills

iEXCEL hosted a hands-on surgical shoulder lab that focused on improving product usage and developing core surgical skills. Orthopaedic residents led by Dr. Richard Amendola practiced both arthroscopic and open techniques using real equipment. This simulation involved open retractors and ACL instrumentation to support simulated, high-quality training and practice.

First-Year PTs Practice Real Scenarios

First-year College of Allied Health Professions physical therapy students led by Dr. Kellie Gossman participated in experiential skills labs held in iEXCEL’s simulated hospital environments. The sessions allowed students to practice safe patient transfers using fully equipped spaces featuring hospital beds, linens, IV poles, oxygen tubing, catheter bags and gowns. By working with real equipment, including a Hoyer lift, students gained confidence and foundational skills essential for clinical practice.

Additional Highlights

iEXCEL in Defence Global

iEXCEL’s statewide communicaitons and connectivity project was recently highlighted in Defence Global as a leading model for remote and distributed medical training. The case study showcased how holographic telepresence, immersive 3D tools and real-time simulation can deliver timely access to expertise for rural providers, narrowing the urban–rural care gap. The article emphasized Nebraska’s vision for equitable, on-demand training and its potential to strengthen health security, emergency response and clinical readiness across the state.
