Improving Human Performance & Effectiveness in Health Care
November 2023
Volume 9 Issue 11
We wish our UNMC faculty, students and friends of iEXCEL a wonderful holiday season. As we prepare for 2024, we anticipate continued innovation in teaching, learning and research as we try new ways of adopting simulation and visualization to “bring learning to life!”
A Breakthrough! Ensuring Successful Surgical Outcomes
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery instructor, Dr. Richard Amendola led his team in a spinal lab preparatory practice exercise to conduct an upcoming real-life patient procedure. By utilizing exactly the same equipment as in the OR and mastering the operative procedure by practicing in a simulation environment, risk is reduced for all parties to achieve extraordinary patient care!
Step-By-Step Hospital Practice
College of Allied Health Professions Physical and Occupational Therapy students led by Dr. Sarah Fellman and Dr. Molly Whitlow, practiced transferring patients from one level of care to the next within a hospital setting. In the Davis Global Center's realistic clinical environments, students were able to utilize lifts and other equipment to ensure safe and efficient transfers for patients.
iEXCEL Visualization Receives Premier Award
Congratulations to the iEXCEL Visualization team who were presented the Premier Award in the Multimedia, Interactive Learning and Website Division by the BioCommunications Association for their NK Cell Toxicity animation. This project demonstrates the function of natural killer cells targeting diseased cells in the body highlighting the involvement of cytoplasmic granules in the process. The animation was created for medical students in cell biology class to supplement a self-paced eLearning module on blood cells.
iEXCEL leaders Dr. Pamela Boyers, Ben Stobbe and Michael Hollins attended the I/ITSEC conference to observe and test the latest simulation tools and technologies and hear from experienced simulation experts from the military, industry and academia!
Girls, Inc. students visited UNMC with the College of Medicine's Radiology Interest Group. Using iEXCEL technologies, UNMC students led the Girls, Inc. visitors in experiencing hands-on instruction for both clinical and surgical radiology with the goal of exposing them to various career opportunities in the field.
Please continue to reach out to us directly with questions (see the iEXCEL UNMC app) about how to access staff in the Davis Global Center, especially if you would like support from iEXCEL in creating simulation and visualization scenarios.
We look forward to continuing to innovate with you!
