Improving Human Performance & Effectiveness in Health Care
October 2023
Volume 9 Issue 10
UNMC faculty, students and iEXCEL staff continue to test and try new ways of adopting simulation and visualization to “bring learning to life!” With many sessions on the schedule, the interprofessional, experiential, performance-based model for health professions training continues to evolve.
iEXCEL Says Farewell to Admiral Robb
It is with great sadness we share that our colleague, President of the National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA), Admiral “Jim” Robb, passed away this month. As a prominent friend and supporter of iEXCEL, Admiral Robb was a passionate patient safety advocate who recognized the positive impact that modeling and simulation can have upon training and patient outcomes. Dr. Boyers has worked closely with Admiral Robb and his NTSA Patient Safety Working Group to ensure that rural health care providers receive access to ongoing training through telesimulation. This group is advocating for federal funding that would support the training of rural health care professions, with iEXCEL recently hosting the Congressional Modeling and Simulation Caucus to demonstrate how UNMC is utilizing technology for rural outreach. We are most grateful to have experienced Admiral Robb's leadership and advocacy at a national level. Please join us in sending sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends as they mourn his loss.
Nurses Practice CRRT Complications
The Nebraska Medicine pediatric nursing team led by Rachelle Ambler, RN practiced identifying and managing complications stemming from continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in pediatric patients. Practicing procedures with simulated infants and children helps the nursing team act fast and effectively in preparation for real-life scenarios!
Third-Year Students Start Hands-On Procedures
Third-year College of Medicine students led by Dr. James Padussis, Dr. Rishi Batra and Dr. Bennett Berning stepped outside the classroom to practice hands-on skills in the Davis Global Center. These experiential learning sessions focused on complicated procedures including breast exams, biopsies, bowel anastomosis and chest tube placement.
First iEXCEL Workshop
iEXCEL hosted its first simulation planning and creation workshop! Led by Dr. Priscila Rodrigues Armijo, faculty reviewed the opportunities available at iEXCEL and methods of simulation that best coincide with learning objectives and outcomes for their students.
If you are interested in future workshop sessions, email us at iEXCEL@unmc.edu.
Additional Highlights
iEXCEL in DC
This month, Dr. Pamela Boyers, and her colleagues from the NTSA visited United States Representatives in Washington DC for a special reception as well as the Congressional Modeling and Simulation Patient Safety Caucus Inaugural Breakfast where funding for telesimulation was the major focus. This high-profile group representing military, industry and academia is highlighting the challenges faced by rural health care providers in keeping up to date with the advances in technologies and a rapidly changing health care delivery model.
New Look on Walkways
iEXCEL is featured on the 42nd Street walkway! In the two new banners, students can be seen utilizing virtual and augmented reality to better understand anatomic structures.
Please continue to reach out to us directly with questions (see the iEXCEL UNMC app) about how to access staff in the Davis Global Center, especially if you would like support from iEXCEL in creating simulation and visualization scenarios.
We look forward to continuing to innovate with you!
