Improving Human Performance & Effectiveness in Health Care
June 2024
Volume 10 Issue 6
As we enter this new academic year, please be sure to reach out to iEXCEL as, through innovations in knowledge transfer, clinical skills experiences and advancing interprofessional education, we partner with you to shape the future of health professions education! Stimulating research opportunities will be an emphasis for iEXCEL this year, so please contact the iEXCEL staff if you are interested in research related to the impact of simulation and visualization on the outcomes of education and/or patient care!
Presenting a Transformational Model for Interprofessional Teams
iEXCEL leaders Dr. Pamela Boyers and Ben Stobbe were joined by Dr. Asit Misra, formerly an iEXCEL fellow, to present "An Interprofessional, Experiential, Performance-based Model for Healthcare Professions" on HealthySimulation.com's Webinar series. Together they discussed iEXCEL at UNMC as a transformational model designed to help address medical errors, a leading cause of death in the United States, through advancing the adoption of simulation and visualization for health professions education.
Dr. Ned Amendola, a sports medicine surgeon at Duke University, was a guest lecturer for the UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation. Following the lecture, his son, Dr. Richard Amendola, an orthopaedic surgeon at UNMC, joined him for a surgical simulation education session for residents. This special, intergenerational simulation featured the father-son surgical duo conducting an osteotomy lab for practicing clinicians and students.
Internal Medicine Interns: Hands-On Orientation
Led by Dr. Jodi Cantrell and Dr. Trek Langenhan, the new class of Internal Medicine residents practiced rapid response reactions and techniques related to critical patient events. Simulated scenarios replicated real-world medical emergencies that occur in the hospital setting. These safe simulated settings gave incoming residents the opportunity to practice critical skills in advance of taking care of real patients. Practicing these skills in the Davis Global Center helps residents gain confidence as they prepare for patient care responsibilities.
Additional Highlights
Silver U Recipient, Sarah Kriss
