As we enter this new academic year, please be sure to reach out to iEXCEL as, through innovations in knowledge transfer, clinical skills experiences and advancing interprofessional education, we partner with you to shape the future of health professions education! Stimulating research opportunities will be an emphasis for iEXCEL this year, so please contact the iEXCEL staff if you are interested in research related to the impact of simulation and visualization on the outcomes of education and/or patient care!
Experiential & Immersive Surgical Simulation
Under the guidance of Dr. Christie Barnes and Dr. Samuel Pate, with distinguished visiting professors from CHI and Mayo-Phoenix, the Department of Otolaryngology recently practiced intricate procedures such as nasoseptal flap, posterior septectomy, maxillary antrostomy and sphenopalatine artery dissection. Learners utilized virtual reality models created by the iEXCEL visualization team in tandem with hands on surgical practice to push boundaries in medical education and surgical excellence!
Future Leaders Explore Health Care Careers
iEXCEL hosted several student groups this month including Completely Kids, NorthStar, Girls Inc., Boys and Girls Club, iSPARK and SHPEP! These visits helped students better understand possible careers in health care, including new roles involving a blend of art and science. Through engaging in hands-on experiences these future leaders gained valuable insights into the ever evolving field of medicine.
Neurology Residents Sharpen Stroke Care Skills
Led by Dr. Michael Pichler, residents from the Department of Neurology participated in a dynamic training session using standardized patients to simulate stroke scenarios. This experiential and immersive activity helped prepare residents to take care of patients with strokes and emphasized crucial aspects of diagnosis, treatment and patient management.
Additional Highlights
Generative AI Summer Symposium
iEXCEL joined the McGoogan Health Sciences Library Summer Symposium on Generative AI. Paul Dye and Dheeraj Varandani presented methods of using AI as a tool for generating medical visualizations, while emphasizing the need for careful consideration of ethical and accuracy issues.
Elizabeth Baron and Dheeraj Varandani presented at the SIGGRAPH 2024 Conference in Denver, CO. SIGGRAPH is the Premier Conference & Exhibition on Computer Graphics & Interactive Techniques where the iEXCEL team joined experts in discussions related to Generative AI for graphical fidelity, content creation and 3D design.
iEXCEL is featured in the Office of Community Engagement's Engagement Matters Blog! The feature highlights iEXCEL's visit to Ralston High School in March, where the team engaged with the Future Health Professionals after-school club, offering students a chance to explore diverse career pathways in health care.
Please continue to reach out to us directly with questions (visit the iEXCEL UNMC app) to learn how to access staff in the Davis Global Center, especially if you would like support from iEXCEL in creating simulation and visualization scenarios.
