Explore New Research Opportunities
The Davis Global Center offers a unique venue for new and stimulating research! With the vision to Improve Human Performance in Health Care the door is open for human factors and outcomes research. Please contact any of our iEXCEL staff if you are interested in exploring research opportunities, especially related to the impact of simulation and visualization on the outcomes of education and/or patient care!
Procedural Nursing: Ready for Anything
Nebraska Medicine nurses led by instructors Amanda Jensen, Erica Dowling and Carley Stalheim used iEXCEL’s interactive, digital walls to enhance fire mitigation and emergency training. By adopting experiential immersive simulation technologies, learners engaged with case studies of realistic emergency scenarios that challenged them to think critically and respond effectively.
Pediatric Practice in Action
Third-year College of Medicine students, led by Dr. Jason Burrows, practiced pediatric care clinical skills. Using the iEXCEL advanced simulation lab, students practiced essential procedures including intubation and ear examinations, along with auscultation and lumbar punctures. Through hands-on experiences to learn and practice their skills using simulation, these future physicians are preparing to provide high-quality and safe care to pediatric patients.
Advanced Surgical Practice
General Surgery residents at UNMC recently practiced a retroperitoneal dissection. Led by Dr. Jason Cook, this simulation allowed residents to understand complexities related to this procedure first-hand. These experiential learning activities prepare UNMC residents to navigate real-world cases in safe, simulated settings where they develop skills with confidence and precision.
Additional Highlights
iEXCEL Leaders Present at ACS
In March, iEXCEL leaders attended the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Conference where Ben Stobbe presented on "Using Data to Your Advantage: Demonstrating Your ROI" and Jenni Bouckhuyt presented "Building, Maintaining, and Celebrating Your Team: A Pathway to Success."
In an article about Omaha's technology sector, Pamela Finn, Senior Advisor at Burlington Capital & Founder of Midwest Women Entrepreneurs Collective stated:
"With UNMC’s EDGE District and the Davis Global Center, Nebraska is positioning itself as a national leader in intelligent, immersive simulation technologies. These innovations have applications far beyond healthcare, extending into manufacturing, agriculture and workforce training."
iEXCEL hosted a Virtual Thinking and Learning Strategies (VITaLS). During this workshop, faculty, staff and industry leaders examined the potential for enhanced interdisciplinary health professions education through a virtual reality enabled art museum experience. The goal of this activity was to strengthen tolerance for ambiguity, while improving observation, listening and team building skills to enhance communication around patients and problems.
