Improving Human Performance & Effectiveness in Health Care

We wish our UNMC faculty, students and friends of iEXCEL a wonderful holiday season. As we prepare for 2024, we anticipate continued innovation in teaching, learning and research as we adopt simulation and visualization to “bring learning to life!”
Diving into the Bloodstream!: VR in Action
College of Medicine students accompanied by Dr. Caroline Ng from the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology stepped into immersive reality to help them better understand complex medical processes! Through engaging with 3D models in the 5-sided Laser CAVE in the Davis Global Center, they explored the intricacies of malaria and other parasites in the bloodstream.
Teamwork to the Rescue!
Department of Emergency Medicine residents saved the holidays when their patient, Santa Claus, was feeling short of breath and too fatigued to deliver presents. Led by Dr. Jason Langenfeld and Dr. Kaitlin Daugherty, this team of residents diagnosed Santa with congestive heart failure. Utilizing teamwork and communication to practice a variety of creative holiday themed emergency scenarios, disaster was averted!
Simulation Keeps Patients Safe
Dr. Jonathan Thompson and Dr. Jason Cook, Department of Surgery led the Vascular Surgery resident team as they practiced abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. Since cases involving AAA are life-threatening, it is critical that learners simulate these high-stakes scenarios in a safe, risk-free environment to prepare to respond thus providing the best possible patient outcomes.
Additional Highlights
Simulating to Keep Patients Safe
Ed Rider from the NU Foundation reports on the iEXCEL Visualization Hub and described how the advanced technologies and the skills of the content creators in the Davis Global Center support students as they develop their patient care skills and build their confidence in the risk-free environment of the Davis Global Center.
Introducing the newest iEXCEL e-Annual Report! As we reflect on the past year, we are thrilled to present a report highlighting the achievements, milestones, and impact of iEXCEL initiatives for FY 22 - 23. Thanks goes out to the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community for taking simulation and visualization to the next level of health professions education!
Please continue to reach out to us directly with questions (see the iEXCEL UNMC app) about how to access staff in the Davis Global Center, especially if you would like support from iEXCEL in creating simulation and visualization scenarios.
We look forward to continuing to innovate with you!
