Improving Human Performance & Effectiveness in Health Care
January 2024
Volume 10 Issue 1
As iEXCEL ushers in 2024, we look forward to another year of innovation in health professions education, as we work alongside our many collaborators who help further the mission to advance interprofessional, experiential, performance-based education.
We are excited to embark on this new year with UNMC students and faculty who continually push boundaries using the amazing technologies in the Davis Global Center. Please join us once again this year as we work with you to shape the future of health professions education!
Paradigm Shift Published
This month, Dr. Pamela Boyers, Dr. Jeffrey Gold, Dr. Dele Davies, Ben Stobbe, RN, and University of Miami professor, Dr. Asit Misra, published "Call for an Interprofessional, Experiential Model for Health Professions Education" in the Journal for International Healthcare Simulation. They introduced and described iEXCEL as a paradigm shift that adopts modeling, simulation and visualization to improve safety and quality outcomes for patients.
Led by Dr. Megan Hyun, Medical Physics residents from the Department of Radiation Oncology collaborated with iEXCEL Standardized Patients to engage in simulated patient-provider communication exercises. Through this human simulation activity, physicists practiced articulating the intricacies of radiation treatment to oncology patients, fostering enhanced interactions, comprehension of the experience, and patient care delivery.
Nursing Practice - Multiple Modalities
College of Nursing first year students, led by Dr. Missy Ofe Fleck and Sandy Sasse, MSN, RN, fully utilized the Davis Global Center during their obstetric rotation. Interactive wall activities let learners analyze complex case studies, while hands-on simulations included normal delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, newborn airway support care and more!
Cardiovascular Skill Enhancement
Dr. Kim Duncan and Dr. Brett Duncan, Department of Surgery, led simulation exercises with vascular surgery fellows as they practiced mitral and aortic valve surgeries. These experiences ensured the team will keep their skills sharp while staying ahead of the latest advancements in surgical techniques.
Additional Highlights
Clinical Perfusion National Recognition
Due to "excellence of practice" and successful integration of simulation into the curriculum, the College of Allied Health Professions' Clinical Perfusion team was designated as an American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Center! Congratulations to the CAHP Perfusion Team!
iEXCEL Senior Leadership attended the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) this month. The team gained valuable insights by attending this conference that attracts many simulationists and industry leaders to explore the latest innovations and best practices in healthcare simulation.
