Improving Human Performance & Effectiveness in Health Care
May 2024
Volume 10 Issue 5
As we come to the close of the academic year, we are very mindful of how fortunate we are to work with UNMC students and faculty who continue to push boundaries using the amazing technologies in the Davis Global Center! As we enter FY 24/25, please be sure to reach out to iEXCEL as together we shape the future of health professions education through innovations in knowledge transfer, clinical skills experiences and advancing interprofessional education! Stimulating outcomes research on the impact of simulation on learners and patients will be a major focus, so please reach out to any of the iEXCEL staff if this is of interest to you!
Visualization Team Featured
The Spring issue of Connect Magazine highlighted the iEXCEL Visualization team. This article explores the evolution of medical imagery while spotlighting the team of artists, animators and programmers who create ground-breaking teaching experiences for UNMC health care professionals. Congratulations to the team who works each day with faculty to create virtual and augmented reality experiences for our students, residents and faculty to bring learning alive!
Led by Dr. Kaitlin Dougherty, the Department of Emergency Medicine hosted a Rural Emergency Medicine course by creating hands-on activities in the Davis Global Center. Bringing health care providers from across Nebraska together ensured that participants engaged in high-fidelity simulations, ultrasound training and clinical skills stations. Interprofessional teams of physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants practiced a wide variety of procedures, enhancing their skills in adult and pediatric emergencies.
UNL Students Simulate Telemedicine
Led by Dr. Kathy Chiou, students from from the UNL Clinical Psychology program practiced telehealth examinations with the iEXCEL Advanced Human Simulation Standardized Patients. During these simulated patient interactions, graduate students worked on communication strategies that demonstrated the benefits and met the challenges inherent to telemedicine.
Two-Day Surgical Summit
Residents from the UNMCDepartment ofOtolaryngologyteamed up with the University of Kansas School of Medicine for an intensive two-day temporal bone dissection lab led by Dr. Anne Maxwell. Learners practiced procedures including mastoidectomy, ossiculoplasty, labyrinthectomy and facial nerve decompression. Through collaboration, detailed discussions and hands-on practice, ENT residents significantly enhanced their understanding and proficiencies for these complex surgical operations.
