Improving Human Performance & Effectiveness in Health Care
August 2024
Volume 10 Issue 8
As we enter this new academic year, please be sure to reach out to iEXCEL to consider innovative ways to “bring learning to life!” Our iEXCEL staff truly enjoy assisting you in creating experiential and immersive ways to transfer knowledge, teach clinical skills and advance team training. Please contact the iEXCEL staff to plan your simulation and visualization activities.
Research Opportunities
The Davis Global Center offers a unique venue for new and stimulating research opportunities! With the vision to Improve Human Performance in Health Care through advancing the adoption of simulation and visualization, the door is open for human factors and outcomes research. For example: Do simulation exercises make a difference to individual (or team) performance? Does immersive reality excite or accelerate learning? Can patient safety improve because of learning in safe simulated environments? Which technologies are most effective for understanding complex anatomy or physiology? As we launch into the next level of development (iEXCEL 2.0), fostering research is a strong emphasis. Please contact iEXCEL staff if you are interested in research related to the impact of simulation and visualization on the outcomes of education and/or patient care!
Minimally Invasive Surgical Practice
Department of Surgery residents used the Davis Global Center Operating Room for an abdominal wall reconstruction lab. Led by Dr. Tiffany Tanner, this simulation training demonstrated cutting-edge surgical techniques and offered hands-on learning on advanced robotic systems.
Interprofessional Trauma Simulation
Nebraska Medicine Emergency Medicine and Surgery Departments joined forces to conduct an interprofessional session on trauma management. Under the guidance of Dr. Jason Langenfeld and Dr. Bennett Berning, resident teams were challenged to succeed in a high-stakes environment as they navigated eight continuous patient simulations over the course of two intense hours. This collaborative effort not only taught, but tested their skills and reinforced the importance of teamwork in critical trauma care response!
Student Research Showcase
The second annual Medical Student Research Showcase was held at the Davis Global Center, featuring digital e-posters displayed on interactive screens. This event highlighted iEXCEL and UNMC's efforts to support the adoption of innovative technologies by engaging students in new ways. Throughout the day, College of Medicine students presented their work, providing incoming students with insights into the research opportunities at UNMC.
Congratulations to the iEXCEL Visualization team for earning an Award of Merit for their groundbreaking digital twinning of medical equipment at the Association of Medical Illustrators Annual Conference! Their innovation is pushing the boundaries of medical technology. We could not be more proud!
Sorrell Simulation Lab features artwork created by UNMC students and practicing medical providers in hopes that their work inspires visiting learners. This student artwork is now on display throughout the simulation lab and in an online gallery!
iEXCEL is thrilled to partner with visionary leaders and teams to help shape the future with Nebraska Medicine’s Innovation Design Unit (IDU). Joint discoveries related to skills development and interprofessional teamwork will guide new care delivery models that improve patient safety outcomes.
iEXCEL is collaborating with the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) on a research survey regarding which haptic technologies are used by health care simulation centers and programs.
If you work or teach in a health care simulation center or program, please take a moment to complete the survey.
Please continue to reach out to us directly with questions (visit the iEXCEL UNMC app) to learn how to access staff in the Davis Global Center, especially if you would like support from iEXCEL in creating simulation and visualization scenarios.
We look forward to continuing to innovate with you!
