Explore New Research Opportunities
The Davis Global Center offers a unique venue for new and stimulating research! With the vision to Improve Human Performance in Health Care the door is open for human factors and outcomes research. As iEXCEL launches into our next level of development (iEXCEL 2.0) there is a strong emphasis on fostering research. Please contact iEXCEL staff if you are interested in research, especially related to the impact of simulation and visualization on the outcomes of education and/or patient care!
Healing Arts Display at the Davis Global Center
iEXCEL collaborated with UNMC & Nebraska Medicine Healing Arts to host an inspiring event titled “Artist Hands as Instrument.” The Artist Talk featured Dr. Dan Firestone from UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, and Omaha-based artist Laurie Victor Kay. During the presentation, Laurie shared her personal journey through a complex hand surgery, which helped restore her ability to create art. The Davis Global Center transformed into an interactive art gallery with immersive installations showcasing the impact of innovative orthopaedic care, as well as meaningful connections between art and science.
Advanced Plastic Practice
The UNMC Plastic Surgery team led by Dr. Sean Figy worked alongside visiting professor Dr. Shaun Mendenhall, for hands-on practice with skin grafting and advanced surgical flaps. This session not only highlighted innovative reconstructive techniques, but demonstrated how internal and external educators can collaborate to teach through simulation.
Simulation "Transfers" Practice to Real-Life Skills
Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) students from the College of Allied Health Professions teamed up to practice patient transport techniques using advanced hospital equipment led by Dr. Kellie Gossman. Simulation-based training provides a safe space to master the use of lifts, transfer devices, and mobility aids. By simulating real-world scenarios, PTs and OTs are better prepared to meet the challenges of patient mobility, creating safer and more efficient patient care environments.
Additional Highlights
Generalist Medical Conference
Dr. Pamela Boyers and Michael Hollins co-presented the keynote address at the 45th Annual Generalists Medical Education Conference in Atlanta, GA. Their talk, "Implementing Change in Traditional Settings", shared meaningful insights from the iEXCEL journey to an interested audience of health care educators and leaders.
"Management of Change in Traditional Settings"
Dr. Jeffrey Gold and Dr. Pamela Boyers published an article in Defence Global titled, "Management of Change in Traditional Settings: A Transformational Journey for Health Professions Education." This case study explores key considerations for implementing experiential and immersive learning to ensure preparedness of the health care work force.
